Annual scientific seminar is next month in Florida.

* The Society of Cosmetic Chemists will hold its annual scientific seminar on June 5-6 at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa located in Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, FL.

The Seminar's Technical Program was arranged by the Committee on Scientific Affairs, which is chaired this

year by Wil Hemker (Gojo Industries). The seminar will begin on Thursday morning with Session A--Natural/Organic Cosmetic Products, moderated by Tim Kapsner (Aveda Corporation), who will present a paper on "Organic Cosmetic Standards: Fact or Fiction?" Other featured papers include John Delfausse (Estee Lauder Companies) presenting "The New Paradigm in Sustainable Packaging for Cosmetics"; Pierre Charlier de Chily (Aldivia) presenting "Green Chemistry: The Natural Ally of the Cosmetic Industry"; Ulrich Issberner (Cognis) presenting "Green Formulating Strategies"; and Farah K. Ahmed (Personal Care Products Council) presenting "Organic, Natural and Other "Green" Labeling Regulations."

Session B--Skin Color on Thursday afternoon will be moderated by Jane Hollenberg (JCH Consulting). This session will include the following presentations: "A New Skin Whitener (Sodium Palmitoylproline and Nymphea Alba Flower Extract) Capable of Modulating Melanogenesis-Related Genes and to Prevent UV-Induced Pigmentation through its Soothing Properties"--Carla Perez (Seppic, Inc.); "Complex Effect Pigments: Innovation Solutions for Ethnic Color Cosmetics)'--Leila Song, Ph.D. (BASF Corporation); "Drawing the Line on Wrinkles by Supporting the Dermal-Epidermal Junction (DEJ)"--Diane Bilodeau, Ph.D. (Atrium Innovations, Inc.); "Ceramidase Control: A Novel Approach to Improving Skin Health"--David Koenig, Ph.D. (Kimberly Clark Corporation) and "Image Analysis to Quantify the Efficacy of Active Ingredients for Skin"--Roger McMullen, Ph.D. (International Specialty Products).

Also on Thursday afternoon, Colleen Rocafort (Ciba Specialty Chemicals Corp.) will moderate Session C--Hair: Aging and Graying. Presentations will include "Fluorescence and Yellowness in Gray Hair" presented by Susan Daly, Ph.D. (Johnson & Johnson); "What Color is Colored Hair?'--Peter Kaplan, Ph.D. (TRI/Princeton); "Hair Aging and Graying"--Teca Gillespie (Procter & Gamble Beauty); "Treatment of Aged and Gray Hair"-Perry Romanowski (Alberto-Culver) and "Rapid Screening Protocol to Preventing Aging from UV Damage to Colored Hair'--Eric Abrutyn (Kao Brands Company).

On Friday morning, Mindy Goldstein, Ph.D. (Estee Lauder Companies) will moderate Session D--Delivery Systems. Featured presentations include "Straightforward Approach for Screening Silicone Gels of Varying Functionality for Use in Cosmetic Ingredient Delivery"--Jeffrey Caruso (NuSil Technology, LLC); "Extended Release of Poorly Water Soluble Active Ingredients Using Linker-Based Lecithin Microemulsions"--Jessica Yuan (University of Toronto); "Vesicular Delivery Systems: From Phospholipids to Silicones for Targeted Skin Sites"--Shaow Lin, Ph.D. (Dow Coming Corp.); "Microemulsions as Sprayable Delivery Systems for Specialty Ingredients"--Terri Germain (McIntyre Group, Ltd.) and "Removal of Microbial Pathogens from Skin Using Magnets"--Michael Daley, Ph.D. (Kimberly Clark Corporation).

Martha Tate, Ph.D. (Kimberly Clark Corporation) will moderate the final session, Session E--Formualtions and Test Methods. Penny Anderson (Access Business Group) will present a paper on "Utilizing Rheological Parameters to Predict Consumer Perceived Sensory Attributes of Cosmetic Creams". Additional presentations will include "Cationic Sunscreens Combining Versatility and Efficacy With Excellent Cost Performance'--Anna Howe (Degussa Goldschmidt Personal Care); "Friction of Human Skin and Interfacial Surfaces: The Flying String Method"--Harry Elden, Ph.D. (Elden Skin Care Biophysics, Inc.) and "A Study of the Effects of Hydrophobic Substitution on the Rheologies of Polyelectrolyte Thickeners"--Paul Mallo (Seppic France).
