Lane council recognizes three local officials

Local officials Michael Dubick, Bill Van Vactor and Terry McDonald were honored recently by the Lane Council of Governments.

Dubick, a board member of Lane Transit District and former Creswell

mayor, was named outstanding elected official at LCOG's 2007 appreciation dinner.

Van Vactor, retired Lane County administrator, and McDonald, director of St. Vincent de Paul, were also honored.

Newood Display Fixture Manufacturing Co. was recognized for business and the United Front, which is a 20-year consortium of local jurisdictions, was honored as "outstanding intergovernmental team."

Pacifica Forum to host discussion on gun use

The topic of Friday's Pacifica Forum will be "Workshop on Guns," an informal discussion about posession and use of firearms.

The forum is free, and will be held at 4 p.m. in the Walnut Room of the Erb Memorial Union on the University of Oregon campus.

Birth To Three schedules new classes for parents

Birth To Three will offer classes for parents of infants and children beginning in February.

"Incredible Infants" meets every other week beginning Feb. 7. New groups begin monthly.

Parents will form a group with other parents of same-age babies to share experiences and feelings and learn more about their child and themselves. The group is led by a professional parent educator.

"Parents Again" will be offered for parents of infants and older children. This class will educate and support parents who are bringing a new baby into the family. Topics include changing family routines, relationships and responsibilities.

Classes begin Feb. 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and will take place weekly for five weeks.

"Parent/Child Adventures" is for parents and their children 21/2 to 5. The class encourages development through music, games, arts, crafts and messy play. The group begins Feb. 8, and will offer four weekly sessions from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The cost is $35.

Scholarships are available for some classes. Call 484-5316 for registration and information.

Casino night to benefit child advocacy program

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Lane County will sponsor a Casino Night from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday at the Oregon Community Credit Union corporate offices.

The casino event will include a hosted bar, all-you-can-eat buffet, casino parlor, cigar and scotch bar, and more.

Keynote speaker to talk about renewable energy

Christopher Dymond, senior analyst with the state Department of Energy, will be keynote speaker at the second annual Lane County Energy Round-Up at the University of Oregon on Thursday.

Dymond will discuss "Renewable Energy - Crossing the 21st Century Chasm." The event runs from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at 150 Columbia Hall.

Other speakers include Eugene Water & Electric Board engineer Bill Welch, biofuels consultant Will Klausmeier, Green News Network co-producer Pamela Driscoll, Solarc Architecture principal Michael Hatten and environmental studies student Sarah Mazze.

The free event is being held in conjunction with a national Focus the Nation teach-in on the issue of global warming.
