White (English, Slippery Rock
U., Pennsylvania) presents findings
from a study of young Native American students investigating how their
cultural differences affect their second language learning of ancestral
tribal languages. The study is based on fieldwork conducted by the
author during the 1990s in which he observed first graders in the
Massett Haida tribal school in British Columbia. After presenting
evidence that Haida first graders do learn and participate differently
than their Euro-Canadian peers, the author explores ways that these
differences might be accommodated to help all children learn better.
