After Nikon's (1605-81) death, his clerk and servant Shusherin (ca. 1630-90) wrote a biography of him that circulated widely in manuscript during the late 17th and 18th centuries. Kain (Russian and European history) and Levintova (comparative politics and Russian and East European politics, both Texas A&M U., Texarkana) present an English edition that differs from previous ones by including glossaries, extensive annotations, parallel variants of the text, and discussion of its literary and sociological value.
