It is no longer enough just to assess and manage the risks of an enterprise's strategic endeavors.

Managers must also take into account the range of outcomes: the knowns, known unknowns and unknown unknowns.

Changes at the very top of some leading financial institutions in the

wake of multibillion-dollar write-downs of mortgage-backed securities attest to the personal consequences of failing to measure and manage risk. Downsizing and declines in the market value of affected institutions exemplify the economic consequences.

But assessing and managing risks stop short of what senior managers need to do in today's competitive environment. To assure the survival and prosperity of their enterprises, they must also understand and manage the uncertainty associated with opportunities.
