Holland (National Centre for Research on Europe, U. of Canterbury at Christchurch, New Zealand) and Bain (a recent doctoral graduate of the same university) present nine papers from a European Union--Network of European Studies Centres in Asia workshop, held in July of 2007 and convened as part of a larger project intended to encourage European-Asian cooperation in European studies. The thematic unifier of the papers presented is the question of identity and the papers address such specific topics as the self-understanding of the European Union as revealed through the justifications of political action and through social policies, European identity as a democracy promoter, Australian elite perceptions of the European Union, visual design and the public communication of European Union identity, and the "European Common House" metaphor in the Australasian news media.
