Discount grocer Aldi announced its first 10 central Florida stores will open.

Stating that it is known for offering high quality, fresh produce, meats

and grocery items at up to 50 percent less than the competition, Aldi also is bringing 400 jobs to the area in 2008 and helping fill the void by other grocers who have left the market.

"Aldi is a great answer for Florida," said David Behm, Aldi Haines City division vice president. "The state has seen 128 combined store closings by other grocers since 2005, one of the highest unemployment rates in 13 years and a 5.3 percent rise in food inflation in the last year. It's a perfect time to provide Florida residents with a quality, low cost grocer and hundreds of new jobs in this market."

The first 10 Aldi stores opened on Sept. 25. They will be followed by another 10 on Oct. 27 and an additional five on Nov. 10. Customers can expect to find 1,400 of the most frequently purchased items at an average 16 percent to 24 percent less than big box and discount stores and 40 percent less than store brands at traditional supermarkets.

"Whether the rising cost of living is hurting your pocketbook, or you'd simply like to have more money to save or spend on other things, Aldi is the right choice for people," Behm said, noting Aldi's gallon of milk costs $2.79, as one example. "It's pretty clear the traditional supermarket shopper is looking for a better value, and we're pleased to be able to provide that."
