Caterpillar may temporarily lay off about 3,300 workers. (Stockpile: the latest producer news).

Caterpillar Inc. may temporarily lay off up to 3,270 workers during the fourth quarter due to lower industry demand for heavy trucks. Furloughs and manufacturing shutdowns are planned in December at the company's Mossville, Ill., engine center, its Mapleton, Ill., foundry and its fuel-systems facilities

in Pontiac, Ill., Jefferson, Ga., and Thomasville, Ga., Caterpillar says. Layoffs may last one to two weeks.

Caterpillar says the estimate includes the 470 full-time hourly employees whose layoffs were announced Sept. 6. Heavy-duty truck orders surged earlier this year as truckers bought vehicles ahead of the Oct. 1 effective date for more stringent diesel-engine emissions standards. Several other companies that make diesel engines and heavy-duty trucks have announced similar layoffs.
