Researchers from the Dartmouth Medical School (in New Hampshire, USA) surveyed more than 3,500 adolescents who had never smoked, and assessed their exposure to smoking in films. In a follow-up survey between one and two years later, 10% of the adolescents had started smoking. Among those who were
Just over 52% of the 10-14-year-olds started smoking after seeing it in movies, compared with 34% of new smokers who started because of cigarette advertising.
The study was reported in The Lancet (Australian, 11/6/03, p.3).
