Obesity an increasing risk in childbirth, UK.

A confidential inquiry into maternal and child health which reviews maternity care in the UK every three years, reports that obesity is a growing risk factor and the chief concern in the deaths of women during pregnancy and childbirth. Of the 295 women who died from pregnancy-related causes in the

UK between 2003 and 2005, more than half were overweight or obese and more than 15% were extremely obese. The most frequent causes of death were blood clots, sepsis and heart disease. The report recommends better counselling and support for obese pregnant women, or those with pre-existing medical problems such as diabetes or epilepsy. (1)
