A portion of a Union Street sand and gravel operation in Westfield was shut down by the city last week after working too close to its boundary lines on Springdale Road. Zoning Enforcement Officer Dennis J. Gaido said he issued a cease and desist order against Berkshire Materials Corp. after receiving

complaints from Springdale Road residents that excavation work was being performed too close to their properties. The company violated a 1955 order, issued to former owner Lane Construction, prohibiting excavation work from being conducted within 175 of the property line. The company had been excavating sand within 50 to 100 feet of the property line. The cease-and-desist order pertains to excavation work along the northern section of the company's pit; the business remains in operation. Company and city officials will meet to work out a solution to the excess excavation, perhaps by restoring the excavated area. Lane Construction sold the 32-acre sand pit at 162 Union St. and 19 acres off Springdale Road to builders Glenn A. Korostynski and Joseph C. Sampson two years ago. They in turn sold the pit to Berkshire Materials Corp. of Huntington later that year, reports The Republican.
